Craniosacral Therapy

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral therapy is a non-invasive form of bodywork that uses the central nervous system (CNS) to treat the root of the body’s complaints. While not a manipulative therapy, it has roots in osteopathy. Practitioners use an educated, gentle, non-invasive touch to engage with the expressions of health in the system.

WHO BENEFITS FROM THE TREATMENT?

Craniosacral therapy supports nervous system regulation and allows the resolution of conditions resulting from stress and trauma. It provides a wide range of benefits for individuals, especially those experiencing:

  • Trauma due to accident or injury
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Physical decline due to age or surgery
  • Mild to moderate scoliosis, including teens and adults
  • Birth trauma issues, including infants and children
  • Neuromuscular movement disorders
  • Spectrum disorders, including self-regulation issues

Craniosacral therapy helps by first calming an overactive nervous system. When the CNS is calm, the brain can connect with and process incoming sensory information correctly.

Craniosacral therapy is an important aspect of a Sensory Integration treatment plan. When the CNS is calm and quiet, it is able to better organize and respond to additional sensory, motor, visual and speech therapies.

WHAT IS SELF-REGULATION?

Self-regulation is the function of the CNS. The CNS is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and sacrum (the large triangular bone at the base of the spine). The outside information the body receives through the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) goes to the brain through the spinal cord. An immature or overactive central nervous system has a more difficult time processing and interpreting sensory information. When the CNS misinterprets outside information, the body responds inappropriately, for example: avoiding or lashing out at perceived discomforts or threats. Both children and adults avoid situations they do not interpret properly. They may also defend themselves with undesirable behaviors.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST TREATMENT

A safe quiet space and the complete attention of your practitioner

Deep listening to your body through gentle touch

Identification of your issues and a plan for addressing them

During your first craniosacral therapy session, there will be no physical pressure or manipulation. You will experience deep relaxation and the movement of energy within your body. While your issues will be identified and addressed during the appointment, more than one session may be needed to fully resolve issues. Recent or acute injuries often respond more quickly than chronic conditions. One to five sessions are usually recommended.
